Raleigh arts group funds schools

RALEIGH, N.C. -- The United Arts Council of Raleigh and Wake County has awarded its annual Artists in the Schools grants to 137 Wake County schools.

The grants, totaling over $113,000, will be used during the 2008-09 school year to provide student enrichment in the arts.

The "Artists in the Schools" funding allows artists chosen by schools and parent-teacher associations to interact with students through performances, workshops and residencies.

Each August, the council holds the United Arts Cultural Festival, allowing interested parties to meet some of the artists to be placed in schools for the upcoming academic year.

Each school is eligible for four grants -- one each for an artist performance, opera or chamber-music performance, writer-in-residence and artist-in-residence.

Public, private and charter schools are eligible to receive the grants, and the program is being expanded to Johnston County through a mentoring relationship with the Johnston County Arts Council.

The United Arts Council of Raleigh and Wake County is an umbrella fundraising group that awards grants to artists and art organizations to promote the arts in Wake County.
