The Student Conversation Association
SCA’s mission is to build the next generation of conservation leaders and inspire lifelong stewardship of environment and communities by engaging young people in hands-on service to the land. SCA is the nation’s largest and oldest organization dedicated to positive youth development through conservation service. Each year more than 4,000 SCA members provide more than 1.6 million hours of service to more than 450 natural and cultural resource management sites in all 50 states. SCA accomplishes this through partnerships and collaborations with federal, state and local resource management organizations, schools, service organizations and communities.
If your nonprofit had unlimited funding, what’s the first thing you would do?
If SCA had unlimited funds, I would place an intern in every single park to educate the public and physically work on restoration projects for that site across the country.
What do you see yourself doing in 10 years?
I see myself running an organization that works on conservation issues in local communities, businesses and homes. Green may be trendy, but I still go to conferences and see the waste all around. Consumerism is still driving everything we do. I want to create a program that is integrated into everyone’s daily lives. Feel free to send me suggestions on how to do this!
Name a place you haven’t been yet but want to visit.
I would love to visit Antarctica (while it is still around). It is exotic, fascinating, and far away.
What do you consider the most rewarding aspect of your job?
The most rewarding aspect of my job is when I see our participants have a life-changing experience. I am fortunate to be able to bring donors into the field and they can see and hear first-hand about how conservation service is not only changing the landscape of our parks, but how it changes the lives of our individual participants.
